Why Spay ?

How many dogs does one litter produce in 5 years ?

This is a drastic underestimation

1st year   4 offspring

….

2nd year  12 offspring

…………

3rd year  36 offspring

………………………………

5th year  324 offspring

Yes the dots are irritating. Three hundred twenty four homeless, unkempt dogs is even more irritating.

Finding homes for dogs is more difficult than you think.

You may find good homes for all of your pet’s litter. But each home you find means one less home for the dogs and cats in shelters who need good homes. In less than one year’s time, each of your pet’s offspring may a litter of their own , adding even more animals to the population.  The problem of pet overpopulation is created one litter at a time.

  • Pet sterilization decreases the homeless animal population.  Shelters are full of homeless animals, and there are not enough homes for all of them.
  • Pet sterilization decreases the number of strays, which are often involved in dog bites and attacks, automobile accidents and damage to private property.
  • Neutering decreases and animal’s desire to escape and wander the neighborhood in search of a mate. This lowers the risk of fights, death caused by getting hit by cars, and lost or stolen pets.

Your sterilized  pet will have less cancer

  1. Testicular and ovarian disease, including neoplasia, is eliminated. Cancers of the gonads are significant causes of death,  especially in dogs.
  2. A dog spayed before her first heat has a mere .5% risk of developing breast tumors later in life.
  3. A dog spayed between her first and second heat has an 8% risk of developing breasts tumors.
  4. A dog spayed after her second heat has a 26% chance of developing breast tumors, which is the same as a dog who is not spayed.
  5. Testicular and ovarian disease, including neoplasia, is eliminated. Cancers of the gonads are significant causes of death, especially in dogs.

This can make your pet better

Spaying or neutering will not make your dog lazy or fat.  Some sled dogs are spayed.  It can make a dog less aggressive .    Castration can reduce, but does not eliminate,  aggression toward other dogs in the family and toward family members.  In some dogs, there is also a modest reduction in aggression toward unfamiliar dogs.  However, there seems to be no effect of castration on aggressive behavior toward intruders or unfamiliar people.
