Valentines Massacre

On Saturday, February 16th the Dunlap Darksiders Derby will be bouting the Cookeville Demolition Dolls. This women’s roller derby bout will take place at the Sequatchie County Fairgrounds (old middle school gymnasium.) All ticket and food sales will benefit the Sequatchie County Fairgrounds. DOORS OPEN AT 5:00 p.m. Central. GAME STARTS AT 6:00 Adult tickets are $7.00 pregame or $10.00 at the door. Pre-game tickets can be purchased from any of the Dunlap Darksiders Derby team from now until game time, or from Mrs. Karen Marshall or Tracy Clark at the UT Extension Office. Children 13 -17 are $5.00 Children 12 and under are free.

The Ewoks Junior Derby team and Zumba with Lori Cook will be providing the half time show. The Sequatchie County Fairgrounds is not only the site of our bouts, but it is also derby home to all three of our teams. This benefit is to give back to the Fairgrounds for all they give to our community. The Dunlap Darksiders Derby team began in October of 2011. This is our season opener, and our team’s first full season. Roller Derby is a full contact sport and unlike the derby from the 30’s and 40’s, roller derby today is not scripted. Roller Derby is a sport that empowers anyone who is a part of the extended roller derby community.

The Dunlap Derby team consists of the Dunlap Darksiders Derby (ladies team) Dunlap Destroyers Derby (men’s team) and Ewoks Junior Derby team (children 6 – 17.) Roller Derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. A roller derby bout is two thirty minute halves broken into two minute jams. Each team has a jammer (represented by the Star on their helmet) whose job is to score points by lapping the opposing jammer and opposing blockers, a pivot (represented by a Stripe on their helmet) whose job is to organize her teams blockers, and 3 blockers whose job is to stop the opposing jammer, while helping their jammer through the pack.
