Whats the big deal at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant? The sheer amount of enriched radioactive material far exceeds anything on our planet. Early on scientists claimed there was a 50/50 chance of a global catastrophic nuclear event. The reason this event is so profound is that there are more than 1,800 tons of enriched radioactive material on site. The site that has already exploded three times and has the potential to explode again. This event will undoubtedly effect hundreds of millions and possibly billions of human beings.
According to Scientific American and The Mainichi Daily News there are;
This is a total of 1814 tons of radioactive material on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site. The Enriched radioactive elements include plutonium and uranium. To put this in perspective the Bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 contained 132 pounds (60 kg) of 80%-grade U-235 was used (106 pounds / 48 kilograms).
