I will be attending the TCCE annual meeting in Memphis, Tennessee on August 18th and 19th.
On Tuesday August 3rd I attended a meeting at the University of Chattanooga hosted by Hamilton County, Chattanooga City and Southeast Industrial Development Association. This meeting was held in order to gather information for Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant. The data collected will be applied to a grant application that will serve as a planning vehicle for improvement in Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia. We in Sequatchie County are fortunate to be part of this new development initiative that will seek part of the $100 million in federal funds that are available to new sustainable communities. We have pledged our chamber office to development of this grant in hopes that we can be part of an improved economic situation.
The festival committee continues to function and approximately 28 attended the last meeting. The next work session will be held August 16th in the City Training center. Anyone interested in joining in this new adventure are welcome to attend the meeting.
Congratulations to all those that were successful in winning their respective races that was held on August 5th. A special thank you is in order for David Boston of David’s Computer for posting the results of the election on our new web site that is found under the heading of Government. David did this from his hospital room in Chattanooga after being admitted earlier in the day for medical test. He has shown his dedication to the community while faced with his own adversity. We hope you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.

The local Exxon Oil distributorship that has been owned and operated by the Johnson family for 93 years has been sold to Deloy Brown Company of Crossville, Tennessee.
According to Rodney Brown the new CEO, the Sequatchie County location will remain in name as Johnson Petroleum and all existing employees will be retained. The Brown family operates an Exxon distributorship in Cumberland County/Crossville and has for over 60 years.
Mr. Baxter “Bax” Johnson was the first owner of Johnson Petroleum begun as an oil distributor. His son Ralph Johnson took over the business as an Esso distributor. Jan Johnson grandson of Bax took over from his father and in his first year Esso became known as Exxon a brand name that remains until this day. Jan left his teaching and coaching position in order to run the family business due to his father’s health and remained as CEO for 38 years. Jan said “ it is time to retire” and pass the business on to others and the Brown family was interested and purchased the business. He said he wanted to express his appreciation to the people of Sequatchie County and surrounding area that has given support to Johnson Oil Company thru the years. Great customers and employees have let us have a successful business and to be able to give back to the community. He stated he wanted to especially thank Anthony and Morgan Smith, faithful and loyal employees for so long.
We welcome the new owners and are happy that they will continue to operate this business that has been in our county for the past 93 years.
We are sadden by the news of one of the Education icons of Sequatchie County and Matriarch of the Johnson family has passed. Mrs. Georgia Bell Johnson mother, grandmother, great grandmother and fondly remembered educator has died at the age of 95 years.

Dunlap Gets Hot Dog Guy
Just as every other famous American city has Hot dog carts , Eric and Laura Beavers have opened a hot dog cart in Dunlap Tennessee. Daddy Dogs are the recessions answer to fast food. Hot dogs have been an American tradition since the early 1900′s. Eric said ” We studied this before we did it.” I spoke with him and he truly had. The Hot dog cart had a 98 on their health inspection, had their prices clearly posted and really looked like they knew what they were doing. Eric admitted it was more work than he anticipated.
This is a good example of someone investing their time to diversify their options in a time of economic upheaval. Eric and Laura have diversified their options with a large amount of sweat equity and a relatively small amount of capital. They have done their homework for this and believe in their idea.
